The Crossing did not quite blow Chinese audiences away when it entered cineplexes during the holiday season, and the reviews from the Hong Kong press were mixed. But like Red Cliff, Woo’s The Crossing was an isolated part of a larger film; perhaps the remainder of the film will improve public opinion of the first half. Woo’s new film picks up where The Crossing left off, with three couples reacting separately, desperately, privately to the sinking of the steamer Taiping, a disaster that claimed approximately 1,500 lives. (There’s your Titanic comparison.) So what if nobody’s wielding double pistols or wearing sunglasses or avoiding omnipresent flocks of doves? A John Woo movie is a John Woo movie, and that’s cause for celebration. ---------

Evocative trailers!
The trailers do remind me of the grand Dr. Zhivago, when it comes to the tumultuous background and beautiful music.  Also evoked something of the English Patient -- romantic, perfect attention to set details, very different love stories and tragedy.  

One of my favorite part of the trailer is when Takeshi's character was on the POW train.  His slightly hunched posture perfectly showed weariness.  Then he so gingerly and protectively took out her letter and photo.  I felt he is rationing himself of the joy of the memory, so he can protect and keep it forever...  It moved me to tears.  Takeshi-san is a very detailed actor, but the great thing about these details is that they never felt technical, they come across very authentic.  

And many more joys these trailers have brought me.  But I have to pace myself, since "waiting is harder than separation..."  Who said that so well in such a beautiful voice?  
Takeshi-san, I believe I'd be happy to hear you read the phone book too.  Waiting is never my strong suit and I have to wait for the international release.  But lately, contemplating your career, I have become a bit more patient.  Because good things are worth waiting for!
