Thank you for the interview post. I recently watched 2046. I am really excited to eventually get to watch a new film from Wong Kar Wai and to see what new direction he is exploring and evolving with the market.
Wong is a director with an extremely recognizable unique style. Some have criticized his movies on the weak plots. But to me, his movie is not so much about story telling, but more about creating a long-lasting mood or emotion. The ones I saw: Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, In the Mood for Love and 2046 all left me with particular emotions about love. When I recall these movies, the particular plot almost did not matter, who ended up together, who seperated..., What lingers was a very unique feeling along with many memorable music scores. To me: Chungking Express let me feel the loneliness of young people who have lost love and who are trying to re-connect. Fallen Angels dealt with feelings of loss of loved ones (multiple stories of loss) while trying to carry on lives in a lonely city. In the Mood for Love is probably the most Mood-board-like of a movie, to me it meant: sensuality, decorum and the oppression of gossip. 2046 spoke to me about the insistence of First Love and the sadness of inability to return. Wong Kar Wai is a true romantic if you look at this body of work!
I am very curious on how he and team will handle this comedy. From the interviews, I am guessing, it is Wong's answer to his previous contemplations of many downside of love. Since he is a true romantic in my book, and the definition of romantic is always believing and hoping for love, he is now offering us his answers to the downside of love. I am glad he is thinking of the market. I believe that the market needs answers or models of how to love more than ever.
