{摘錄}

Melbourne's recycled soap is saving lives in India

We've all done it. Ripped open a packet of soap in a hotel bathroom only to use it a couple of times before checking out and heading home.

Few would ever wonder what happens to that barely used bar. Fact is, it ends up in landfill. Millions of tonnes of "waste soap" a year is generated by the hotel industry worldwide. But not for much longer, if the Melbourne-based not-for-profit group Soap Aid gets its way.

In the last five months alone Soap Aid has collected more than a tonne of used soap from the city's hotels. Once this is broken down and made into fresh bars at a purpose built factory in Braeside, the soap is ready to go global.

The first soap shipment of 140,000 bars is due to arrive in Patna in the north-east Indian state of Bihar in March. The bars will be distributed to 2000 disadvantaged families by the local Rotary group.

"It's the ultimate trash-to-treasure story," said Soap Aid chief executive Michael Matulick. "We're repurposing this trash from one part of the world and making it into a reusable commodity that can save lives."

The reconditioned 100-gram bars carry with them a vital health message – highlighted most recently by the hepatitis A outbreak linked to contaminated frozen berries.

Soap Aid chief executive Michael Matulick hands out recycled soap bar to schoolchildren in the Indian city of Patna.

"It is suspected that some of those people packing the berries in China were infected with hepatitis A," said Martyn Jeggo, director of Deakin University's Geelong centre for emerging infectious diseases. "It is transmitted through faeces and then through dirty hands. If they were washing their hands with soap, this wouldn't be happening."

According to the World Health Organisation, more than half the 9000 children who die each day from hygiene-related diseases in poor communities could be saved by washing their hands with soap.

Professor Jeggo, director of health programs at Soap Aid, said the city of Patna was selected to receive the reconditioned soap because its population and level of poverty meant the program could have a significant impact.

"We grew up being asked 'have you washed your hands?'," Professor Jeggo said. "The message is instilled in us from a very early age."

But not every community is so lucky. Mr Matulick said when he went to India to meet the people of Patna last December he took with him some soap bars to hand out to schoolchildren. Some of them didn't know what it was.

"They didn't know if it was something to eat or what it was," Mr Matulick said. "They were so thrilled to get a gift. Being given something was so foreign to them."

He said a second shipment was due to depart for India by the end of July.

So far 30 Melbourne hotels have signed up, representing 5500 hotel rooms. Mr Matulick said he hoped the program, which has also sent soap to Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and the Philippines, would expand and set up soap recycling factories overseas.
